ABSTRACT
The decrease of response to repetitive stimulus is named habituation and it is a basic way of learning that depends on the integrity of the nervous system. Verifying the occurrence of habituation of the blink reflex (BR) in newborns under repetitive sound stimuli and to determine the quantity of necessary stimulus in order to manifest the phenomenon was the objective of this paper. Eighty-five newborns that went to the routine auditive screening were studied. Among them, 65,9% showed up habituation and 34,1 % did not show up it. Among those that showed habituation, 55% stopped presenting BR during the first ten stimuli; 34% between the 11th and 20th and 11 % between the 21st and 27th stimulus. The habituation of the BR to the sound stimulus happened in 65,9% of newborns whose neurological condition did not demonstrate alterations. This phenomenon manifested itself predominantly during the presentation of first ten stimuli.
