O que completa uma mulher? Um estudo sobre a relação entre não-maternidade e vida profissional / What completes a woman? A study about the relation between non-maternity and professional life

RESUMO

A pesquisa apresentada neste artigo buscou compreender a relação entre não-maternidade e vidaprofissional. Além de elucidar o papel do trabalho como substituto da suposta completude femininaatrelada à maternidade; conhecer as influências individuais e do contexto histórico-social e culturalsobre o fato de não ser mãe; investigar os sentimentos e as percepções que a não-maternidade suscita.Foi utilizada a pesquisa qualitativa e, como instrumento de coleta de dados, o grupo focal. Participaramda pesquisa seis mulheres, professoras universitárias com mais de trinta e cinco anos, sem filhos eexercendo a docência em curso superior. Para análise dos dados, foi utilizada a análise textual deMoraes (2003). Os resultados apontaram que a profissão não substitui a maternidade, assim como nãofoi obstáculo à realização da maternidade. A atividade profissional demonstrou ocupar um lugar paralelo,sendo significativa via de investimento e busca de completude. A falta de motivação à maternidade foio fator mais presente e definidor de seus comportamentos e elas não pareciam imersas em sentimentosde tristeza ou de vazio pela escolha daquela condição. Além disso, não percebem a maternidade comoalgo inerente à identidade feminina.

ABSTRACT

The research presented in this article tried to understand the relation between non-maternityand professional life. Besides elucidating the role of work as the substitute of the supposed femalecompleteness geared to maternity; knowing the individual influences and the social-cultural andhistorical context about the fact of not being a mother, investigating the feelings and perceptionsthat the non-maternity brings. It was used the qualitative research and, as an instrument ofdata, the focal group. The participants of the research were six women, university teachers whowere more than 35 years old, without any children and working in university courses. To theanalysis of data, it was used the textual analysis of Moraes (2003). The results showed that theprofession does not replace the maternity as well as it was not an obstacle to the completion ofmaternity. The professional activity showed to have a parallel place, a significant way ofinvestment and search for completeness. The lack of motivation to maternity was the most commonfact and the defining of their behavior and they did not look sad or empty because of theircondition. Besides that, they do not see the maternity as something inherent to the female identity
