ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to provide a literature review about the criteria that make up the depression diagnosis and the intensity of its symptoms. It is in discussion that doing a more detailed analysis of the subjects answers in the instruments which give a quantitative score is important and very relevant. In the study, answers from adolescents to the Beck Depression Inventory-II were used to illustrate the discussion, because of the high value of this instrument in the clinical and in the research community. It is possible to conclude that different levels of depression intensity may have a better comprehension using a qualitative study of each of the scale items that represent the depression constellation. When well studied and observed these items may be important subclinical indicators that may bring a better understanding of some problem more severe that the subject may be dealing with.
