ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior towards physical activity (PA) and the indexes of health in obese adults before and after bariatric surgery. 38 subjects of both genders were interviewed, with age between 20 and 65 years old (39.5 ± 11.42), and the average before surgical BMI of 46.81 ± 5.68 kg/m2 and after of 32.24 ± 5.92 kg/m2. In order to analyze the given data was applied descriptive statistics and the McNemar's test, Wilcoxon and ANOVA with post hoc of Tukey test?s, using the significance level of 5%. The majority of those individuals were females (78.9%), receiving three minimal wages (55.3%), and with elementary school educational level (42.1%). In the analysis of BMI for the postoperative period, all groups decreased significantly after surgery (p < 0.01). Moreover, after surgery there was significant improvement (p < 0.01) in all the following features related to health health awareness, stress, sleep, and anxiety, as well as a decrease in smoking and alcohol consumption. In relation to PA, there was increase in activities with moderate intensity and during the leisure activities those individuals began to show a more active behavior (p < 0.01). However, the majority of the interviewed people did not take part in physical exercises programs, saying that they needed guiding to PA (73.7%). The bariatric surgery showed to be efficient towards the perception upon the improvements of features related to health; but, the help of a physical education professional appears to be essential for guiding and motivating those people to the physical activities practice.
