ABSTRACT
Objective To observe the effect of two different periodontal therapies on serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α)in elderly patients with coronary heart disease. Methods Totally 42 elderly patients with severe periodontitis were randomized into two groupsperiodontal initial therapy and periodontal flap surgery group. The percentage of bleeding on probing (BOP),probing depth (PD) and serum levels of CRP and TNF-α were recorded at baseline and 12 weeks after treatment. Results The percentage of BOP,PD and serum levels of CRP and TNF-α in all patients were significantly reduced at 12 weeks after treatment as compared with baseline (all P<0.05).Serum levels of CRP and TNF-α were lower in periodontal flap surgery than in periodontal initial therapy at 12 weeks after treatment [(3.4±9.1) μg/L vs.(2.6 ±7.9)μg/L,(4.4±1.8)mg/L vs.(3.5±2.1)mg/L,both P<0.05].Conclusions Compared with periodontal initial therapy, periodontal flap surgery maybe better to reduce the levels of serum inflammatory markers.
