ABSTRACT
Sex hormones such as estrogen in females may play prominent roles in the control of numerous physiological process including growth, development, reproduction, and metabolism. The effects of estrogen are receptor dependent.Estrogen receptor(ER)have two main forms,Erαand Erβ,which were widely distributed in the central and peripheral tissues.Recently, more and more data have shown that the central estrogen via ER play a critical role in the regulation of various biological effects including physiological and pathological process. This article will review the role of estrogen on energy metabolism, especially in hypothalamus,in order to find the target sites of the central estrogen responsible for the diseases related to reproduction and energy metabolism.
