ABSTRACT
AbstractObesity is one of the epidemics of this century, and its prevalence is on the rise in most parts of the world, despite the efforts to lower it. This fact necessitates a change in the approach of the studies that have been conducted thus far. This paper presents a revision of the Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality by Dr. Madeleine Leininger and its application to the study of obesity with the ultimate aim of providing contributions to the scientific community, -based on a nursing theory. Furthermore, it aims to propose public policies which are culturally congruent and tend to lower the prevalence of obesity. First, we present the overview of obesity followed by a description of some aspects of the Theory of Cultural Care, such as its philosophy and research methodology. In studying this phenomenon based on a nursing theory that looks at the cultural dimension of human care, just as Dr. Madeleine Leininger does, gathered data to discover the cultural meaning, values, beliefs and lifestyles of the overweight and obese within their cultural context which would help to provide real explanations of the problem.
