ABSTRACT
The pelvic physiotherapy is critical in the treatment of urinary, anorectal and sexual dysfunction in men, women and children. One of the great difficulties at the start of treatment is self-awareness or knowledge of the pelvic floor muscles. Thus, it is important to review and update the most widely used techniques for this purpose, so that health care professionals can benefit their patients in future treatments. This review describes the most used and effective physical therapy techniques in stimulating proprioception and perception of pelvic muscles digital touch, biofeedback, verbal instruction, vaginal cones and proprioceptive training. Emphasis should be given on the digital touch that was the most frequent and biofeedback that was the most effective. It is concluded that pelvic physiotherapy is effective in training proprioception and muscle awareness; however more studies comparing the effectiveness of techniques, used individually or combined are necessary.(AU)
