Introduction:
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a form of treatment used in the rehabilitation of individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KO). However, there is still disagreement in the literature about the effectiveness of this treatment modality. Objective:
To evaluate the effectiveness of NMES use in pain, functional performance and muscular strength in individuals with KO.Methods:
The electronic databases Pubmed/Medline, Pedro and Scielo were retrospectively consulted by the year 2010. The articles were selected from the following inclusion criteria 1)Design:
randomized clinical study; 2) Type of intervention a) Experimental group should use NMES as part of the rehabilitation program, b) control group, without treatment, placebo, other therapeutic intervention. The primary outcomes included in the present review were pain, functional performance and muscle strength and as a secondary outcome to quality of life. Results:
After screening, 26 studies were retrieved in full text and 7 were included in the study. Primary outcomes included in the present review were pain (7 studies), functional performance (6 studies), and muscle strength (5 studies). The secondary outcome of quality of life was found only in 2 studies. Conclusion:
The studies demonstrate the effectiveness of NMES associated or not with exercise to reduce pain in individuals with KO. However, other variables evaluated as physical performance, muscular strength and improvement of the quality of life showed significant results only in intragroup comparisons with the control group.
