Objective:
To verify the association between congenital syphilis and hearing loss in neonates. Methods:
Search for articles in the Medline (Pubmed), LILACS, SciELO and BIREME databases without location restrictions and languages in Portuguese, English and Spanish, published between January 2010 and May 2020. The research was conducted on the basis of data with the descriptors [(syphilis) or (neonates) and (hearing)] and [(syphilis) or (newborn) and (hearing)].Results:
Five studies were found that answered the guiding question. Three of the five selected studies found an association between congenital infection and hearing loss. Congenital syphilis, even if asymptomatic, can cause sensorineural hearing loss in neonates, early or late, children over one year old. Conclusion:
It was found that congenital syphilis is observed as one of the causes for hearing loss, resulting in important impacts on the child's development. Thus, investments in public policies are necessary to achieve, early diagnosis and intervention.
