RESUMO
Objetivo:
Conhecer a frequência e os tipos de hábitos bucais deletérios em um grupo de crianças de 5 a 12 anos residentes na Região Metropolitana do Recife, Pernambuco.Método:
Foi realizado um estudo transversal durante o Feriado Nacional de 12 de Outubro - Dia das Crianças, no Horto Zoobotânico de Dois Irmãos. A amostra foi composta por 970 crianças, de ambos os gêneros, que estavam presentes no local e cujos pais ou responsáveis, após assinatura do Termo de Consenti mento Livre e Esclarecido, responderam a perguntas sobre os hábitos bucais deletérios dos seus filhos. As informações foram obtidas por uma equipe treinada de seis alunos da pós-graduação e dezenove alunos da graduação da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de Pernambuco.Resultados:
60,8% das crianças apresentavam hábitos bucais deletérios, sendo o mais prevalente a onicofagia (44,6%) seguida pelo bruxismo (12,6%), sucção digital (9,7%) e sucção de chupeta (7,4%). Observou-se ainda que 457 crianças (47,1%) possuíam apenas um tipo de hábito, 117 (12,1%) possuíam dois tipos de hábitos e 16 (1,6%) possuíam três tipos de hábitos simultaneamente.Conclusão:
A maioria das crianças apresentou algum tipo de hábito bucal deletério, ainda verificando-se crianças com mais de um tipo de hábito concomitantemente, o que indica a necessidade de ações educativo-preventivas visando o controle desses hábitos, a fim de promover saúde bucal.ABSTRACT
Objective:
To know the frequency and the types of deleterious oral habits in 5 to 12 year-old children living in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.Method:
A cross-sectional study was carried out during the National Holiday of October 12 - the children's day, in the ZOO. The sample comprised 970 children of both sexes. Data was collected from interviews with parents or guardians. The information had been gotten by a trained team of six undergrad and 19 grad students from the School of Dentistry of the Pernambuco University.Results:
60.8% of the children presented deleterious oral habits, being nail biting (44.6%) the most prevalent followed by bruxism (12.6%), finger sucking (9.7%) and pacifier sucking (7.4%) It was also observed that 457 children (47.1%) had only one kind of habit, 117 (12.1%) had two types of habits and 16 (1.6%) had three types of habits simultaneously.Conclusion:
The majority of children presented some type of deleterious oral habit, being able the same one to present more than a type of habit concomitantly. In this way, it has the necessity of educative-preventive actions aiming at the removal of these habits in order to promote oral health.
