Covert research: el debate ético sobre la investigación encubierta en las ciencias sociales / Covert research: the ethical debate concerning covert research in social sciences

RESUMEN

El siguiente artículo se propone abordar el controvertido asunto de la investigación encubierta. En primer lugar, nos centraremos en analizar la misma a la luz de los dilemas éticos que plantea, revisando qué dicen sobre esta técnica diversos códigos normativos. Posteriormente, examinaremos los tipos de investigación encubierta empleados en las ciencias sociales aquellos que implican un consentimiento informado en base a información falsa, y aquellos que implican una ausencia de consentimiento informado (en forma de observación encubierta y observación participante encubierta). Finalmente, repasaremos los argumentos a favor y en contra de dicha metodología esgrimidos por diversos investigadores. Concluimos que conducida a partir de parámetros éticos, la investigación encubierta se constituye en una poderosa herramienta para la investigación social

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to examine the controversial research method of covert research. Firstly, we will analyze this technique in light of the ethical dilemmas it entails, revisiting what it is said about the method in several codes of conduct. Secondly, we will examine the different covert research methods that are often employed in social sciences; these include studies where informed consent is given on the bases of false information, and studies where no informed consent whatsoever is sought from the participant , as it is the case with covert observation and participant covert observation. Finally, we'll dive into the arguments put forward by fellow researchers for and against covert research. We conclude that covert research can be a powerful social research resource as long as the study that makes use of it is conducted within a careful ethical framework.
