Vaginal candidiasis and intrauterine contraceptive device

ABSTRACT
This study was done on 100 women fitted with an intrauterine contraceptive device [IUCD users] as well as 100 women not wearing an IUCD [control group]. None of the subjects had factors known to predispose to infection with candida. In the index group [IUCD users], 16 vaginal samples were positive for candida, and the tail of the IUCD yield positive culture in 19 cases. In the control group, 7 vaginal samples were positive for candida. These findings strongly suggested that the IUCD is a predisposing factor in vaginal colonization by candida
