ABSTRACT
This study aimed to evaluate the function of lower urinary tract prospectively using advanced urodynamic technology to delineate and quantify the changes that may take place in vesicourethral function subsequent to total abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy. The study included 60 patients divided into two equal groups, group I [total abdominal hysterectomy- TAH group] and group II [vaginal hysterectomy- VH group]. All women were subjected to the uroflowmetry, voiding cystometry and urethral pressure profile using urodynamic investigation system. This urodynamic evaluation was carried out preoperatively and six weeks after the operation. Cystomeytric, uroflowmetric and profilometric studies showed no significant changes between both groups. No significant urodynamic changes were found irrespective of the type of hysterectomy [TAH or VH]. However, in the current medicolegal environment, it is recommended that women with urinary symptoms must be carefully evaluated prior to surgical interference
