RESUMEN
From march-94 to december-98, 945 streptococcus pneumoniae strains (source blood 57 por ciento, CSF 24 percent, pleural fluid 6 percent, other sites 13 por ciento) were submited form 23 of 28 national healthcare districts to the Reference Laboratory for gram positive cocci, Instituto de Salud Pública, as part of a national passive surveillance program. Seventy percent of isolates belonged to 9 serotypes (infrecuency order) 14, 1 5, 6B, 7F, 3, 6ª and 23F. Of 729 strains analysed by MIC, 29.4 percent under 5 years old (12.8 percent over 5 years old) were penicillin resistant (14.2-6.2 percent intermediate and 15.3-6.6 percent highly resistant). Under 5 years old, 12.9 percent (6.6 por ciento over 5 years old), were cefotaxime resistant (7.4-1.9 percent intermediate and 5.5-4 percent highly resistant)
