RESUMO

Discute a instalação do modelo penitenciário na cidade de Florianópolis, em Santa Catarina, na década de 1930, sob a ótica do pensamento médico-higienista, e suas interfaces com o pensamento jurídico. Analisa também os discursos que, na época, eram aceitos ou considerados com valor científico. Edelvito Campelo D'Araújo, diretor da Penitenciária Pedra Grande entre 1935 e 1945, realizou uma reforma na instituição tanto administrativa, com o aumento e especialização do funcionalismo e a criação de novas seções, como física, isto é, na estrutura do prédio. Essa reforma tinha um duplo objetivo: além de implementar uma administração mais racional e moderna, de acordo com o ideário positivista da República Nova, buscava realizar um estudo científico, elaborado pelo próprio diretor, no intuito de conhecer a fundo o 'fenômeno crime' e as motivações dos criminosos.

ABSTRACT

The article discusses the introduction of the penitentiary model in the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in the 1930s, from the perspective of hygienism and its interfaces with legal thought. It also analyzes the discourses that were accepted or deemed of scientific value at that time. Edelvito Campelo D'Araújo, director of the Pedra Grande Penitentiary from 1935 to 1945, enacted an administrative and physical reform that boosted staff numbers and increased their specialization while also adding new sections to the building structure. The reform had a twofold goal it was meant to introduce a more rational, modern administration, in tune with the positivist thinking of the New Republic, and to conduct an in-depth scientific study, designed by the director himself, of the 'crime phenomenon' and of perpetrators' motives.
