RESUMO
JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS:
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:
There are many simple neuropsychometric instruments that can be easily performed and used to assess several cognitive functions. Their role is to improve the diagnosis of the early stage patients with dementia, especially in Alzheimers disease. The tests comprehends many cognitive skills, compromised isolated first and then in combination, such as recent memory and verbal understanding (instructions), spatial orientation, abstract thinking, planning, concentration, executive and visuospatial skills. Screening tests can be used in daily practice for screening dementia. Although screening can be viewed as a good practice, recent studies showed controversial results. This review pretends to up-to-date information about the importance of screening for dementia. CONTENTS We review the most relevant information in epidemiology and diagnosis of Alzheimer´s disease based on guidelines and original studies found on PubMed and LILACS databases.CONCLUSION:
Most of studies favor the utilization of screening tests in clinical practice to improve diagnosis substantially.(AU)
