ABSTRACT
The objective of this paper is to reflect upon the challenge that being able to work and think freely has meant for psychoanalysts since the beginnings of our field. The discussion will center on the issue of freedom within clinical practice, in the construction of new theoretical frameworks, which are the expression of different attempts to recuperate freedom to think and understand clinical practice, and, finally, the complex relationship between analyst and the institutional and cultural environment, which also conditions the freedom to think. From my point of view, these three perspectives - clinical practice, theoretical and technical developments and the contexts in which we work have been, from the beginnings of psychoanalysis, intimately related to the freedom to think.
