(37,5%), ?melhorar a qualidade do sono? (20%) e reduzir o nível de estresse? (17,5%).
ABSTRACT
The purpose of the present study was to verify the main reasons a group of elderly women is engaged in physical activity. Forty female participants, with the mean age of 69,7 ± 7,1 years old, who have been exercising for a minimum period of 6 months (time established to classify participants as engaged and physically active) took part in this study. Twenty participants are part of a physical activity group in the city Belo Horizonte, and the other twenty are from a physical activity group of the city of Betim. A questionnaire with 2 segments adapted from Chagas and Samulski (1992) was used for the data collection. The first segment has the demographic and physical activity habits data. The second segment evaluates the percentage of how important are the reasons of participating in physical activity. The most frequent answers for the reasons elderly women are engaged in physical activity are the following health improvement/maintenance (92,5%), social interaction (85%), disease prevention (85%), learn new activities (82,5%) and self-esteem improvement (82,5%). On the other hand, weight loss (37,5%), quality of sleep improvement (20%) and stress reduction (17,5%) were the least frequent answers for the reasons elderly women are engaged in physical activity.
