Obama y la investigación en células madre embrionarias humanas / Obama and research in human embryonic stem cells

RESUMEN

El increíble avance científico ha permitido el desarrollo de tecnologías de fertilización por transferencia nuclear de células somáticas. Gracias a estos adelantos ha sido posible desarrollar el conocimiento sobre las células embrionarias, el mantenimiento de su pluripotencialidad y la existencia de bancos de células con fines terapéuticos. Sin embargo, la manipulación de células embrionarias no ha estado exenta de una ardua discusión científica, ética y política en base a los temores que genera el poder manejar a voluntad la maquinaria genética totipotente de una célula madre indiferenciada. En las últimas elecciones presidenciales de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, el entonces candidato Obama y ahora presidente prometió impulsar nuevamente la investigación en este campo. Esta promesa abre la esperanza para muchos que esperan opciones terapéuticas hoy imposibles.

ABSTRACT

The most recent and astonishing scientific advances have allowed the development of fertilization techniques based on the somatic cell nuclear transfer method. Thanks to this, it has been possible to widen knowledge about embryo cells, maintaining their pluripotentiality and now there are some cell banks available for therapeutic purposes. However, embryo cell manipulation has been the subject of many discussion from the scientific, ethics, and politics point of view, because of many fears generated by the likelihood of manipulating the genetic machinery of a non-differentiated totipotent stem cell. In the last Presidential Elections in the USA, Mr. Barack Obama proimised to strengthen research in this promising field. This promise opens the way for many patients that are awaiing for therapy options that nowadays still are not possible.
