Comportamiento visual y del astigmatismo corneal inducido en operados de catarata por técnica de Blumenthal / Visual and induced corneal astigmatism behaviour in operated from cataract using the Blumenthal technique

RESUMEN

Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar el comportamiento visual y del astigmatismo corneal inducido en pacientes operados de catarata mediante técnica de Blumenthal. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y longitudinal sobre el comportamiento de la agudeza visual y el astigmatismo corneal inducido en 183 ojos de pacientes intervenidos de catarata con esta técnica en el Hospital Provincial Universitario Comandante Faustino Pérez de Matanzas en el período comprendido entre junio 2007 a junio 2008. Las variables estudiadas fueron la edad, el sexo, el tipo de catarata, la agudeza visual y queratometría pre y posquirúrgica, así como las enfermedades oculares asociadas. Se utilizaron técnicas de estadísticas descriptivas. El grupo de edad que predominó fue el de 75 a 84 años, y el tipo de catarata senil. El 92,8 por ciento de los pacientes mejoraron la agudeza visual después de la cirugía, mientras que el astigmatismo inducido fue bajo. La Degeneración Macular relacionada con la edad y el glaucoma fueron las enfermedades oculares que atentaron contra la buena visión postquirúrgica. Los resultados en la agudeza visual de los pacientes intervenidos con esta técnica son buenos y es bajo el astigmatismo inducido, garantizándose una mejor recuperación y la más rápida incorporación de los pacientes a sus actividades habituales.

ABSTRACT

Our objective was evaluating visual and induced corneal astigmatism behaviour in patients operated from cataract using the Blumenthal technique. We carried out a descriptive, longitudinal study on visual acuity and induced corneal astigmatism behavior in 183 eyes of patients operated of cataract using this technique at the Teaching Provincial Hospital Comandante Faustino Pérez of Matanzas in the period from June 2007 to June 2008. The studied variables were age, sex, kind of cataract, visual acuity, pre- and post-surgery keratometry, and also the associated ocular diseases. We used descriptive statistics techniques. The predominant age group was that from 75 to 84 years old, and the senile kind of cataract. 92,8 percent of the patients improved their visual acuity after surgery while the induced astigmatism was low. Macular Degeneration related with age and Glaucoma were the ocular diseases attempting against the good post-surgery vision. The results in visual acuity of the patients operated using this technique are good and the induced astigmatism is low, guaranteeing a better recuperation and the fastest reincorporation of the patients to their daily activities.
