ABSTRACT
The deficiency of glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is the most common enzymopaty in humans and the fifth most common birth defect worldwide. It has a global distribution but it is skewed due to the selective advantage it provides in areas with highprevalence of malaria. A review of the epidemiology, genetics, pathophysiology and clinical preaspects of this deficiency is presented here and also is shows the evidence that support the hypothesis of that their relationship with malariais protective. Because in Colombia this disease is potentially an important but ignored cause of morbidity and mortality , also proposes a strategyfor estimating the prevalence and discusses issues related to its screening.
