ABSTRACT
The peripheral nervous system exhibits a remarkable ability to regenerateafter injury. The sciatic nerve reactions following axonotmesis produce morpho-functional responses at the target muscle, injury epicenter and at certain retrograde neuronal districts. Despite therapeutic advancements, the functional restoration is incomplete in most cases. In this context, we tested if exercise (swimming) is able to interfere in both functional gait recovery and plastic reactions in the motoneurons of the spinal cord. FortyWistar rats were divided into four groups (n=10 each), submitted to a 30 min/day swimming routine, beginning 1, 7, 14 or 21 days after the sciatic nerve injury. All groups exhibited functional recovery, significant differences were not observed in the number of spinal motoneurons among the groups studied. According to both functional and histological analysis, therapeutic exercise, in the conditions of the present study, was unable to accelerate the regeneration process.
