RESUMEN

Se ha observado que ante el debate mundial suscitado por el caso Terry Schiavo a cerca de la eticidad y licitud de la interrupción de medidas de soporte vital en pacientes irrecuperables, se han vuelto a mencionar temas relacionados con la eutanasia. Entre estos temas se encuentra el de la utilización de la sedación en cuidados paliativos, y si esta medida podría considerarse como eutanasia pasiva. Se sabe que en Cuidados Paliativos, la administración de fármacos sedantes, per se, no supone un problema ético cuando se han prescrito bajo las indicaciones correctas y con el consentimiento del paciente. El objetivo del presente artículo fue aclarar algunos aspectos sobre este tema y su posible aplicación ética en los cuidados paliativos. Se eligió el método del análisis bioético dentro de la corriente humanista. Se concluyó presentando las condiciones puntuales en que la utilización de sedación terminal es éticamente aceptable.

ABSTRACT

It has been observed that as a result of the world debate raised by Terry Schiavo's case about the ethics and lawfulness of the interruption of vital support measures in irrecoverable patients, topics related to euthanasia have been dealt with again. One of these topics is the utilization of sedation in palliative care and wether or not this measure could be considered as passive euthanasia. It is known that in palliative care the administration of sedatives per se is not an ethical problem if they are prescribed under the correct indications and with the patient's consent. The objective of this article was to clear up some aspects on this topic and their possible ethical application in palliative care. The bioethical analysis method was selected within the humanist trend. To conclude, the point conditions in which the use of terminal sedation is ethically acceptable were presented.
