Hacia una fenomenología de la enfermedad / Towards a phenomenology of disease

RESUMEN

La medicina moderna, al darle un carácter pasivo al cuerpo, lo condenó a la ausencia. Según esto, el hombre está compuesto de una realidad orgánica que deviene cosa, un objeto más de la naturaleza que puede ser controlado. Al igual que todo lo perecedero y lo temporal, el cuerpo es despreciado. Querer prolongar la vida, huirle a la muerte así sea de una forma técnica, es solo la muestra del afán por mantener lo corporal en unos indicadores artificiales de normalidad. Hacer una fenomenología de la enfermedad implica tener presente el asunto del cuerpo. Por medio de ella se constata un asunto que, a los ojos del mundo antiguo, era esencial los hombres son mortales; por eso es preciso que se cuiden, que se cultiven a sí mismos, que se curen.

ABSTRACT

Modern medicine has given a marginal and passive character to the body and, therefore, has relegated it to absence. In this perspective, human beings are made of an organic reality that becomes a thing, another object of nature that can be controlled. In the same way as everything temporary and perishable, the body is despised. Attempts to prolong life, to escape from death are an indication of the eagerness to maintain the body within artificial indicators of normality. To make a phenomenology of disease involves taking into account the matters of the body. Through phenomenology, it is possible to verify an issue that was essential in the ancient world, namely that human beings are mortal; consequently, it is necessary that they take care of themselves, that they cultivate themselves, that they look for a true cure.
