Introduction:
C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammatory activity inseveral clinical situations. Was known that smoking can itself to induce systemic inflammation and it is the major risk factor for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD is associated with a chronic inflammation of the airways and with a low-grade systemic inflammation. Objective:
The objective of this study was to evaluate the CRP levels in healthy individuals and in smokers without clinical manifestations of COPD, correlating it with the pulmonary function and tobacco load. Materials andMethods:
Were studied 30 current smokers e 30 never-smokers controls, that performed CRP dosing and peak expiratory flow measurement. Results:
No difference was found between CRP levels in smokers (2.19 ± 1.33 mg/L) and controls (2.68 ± 2.75 mg/L). Was found a significant correlation between CRP levels and the tobacco load measured in pack/years (R2 = 0.2962). Smokers that smoke more than 10 pack/years showed CRP levels significantly higher (4.3 ± 4.17 mg/L) than who smokes less than 10 pack/years (1.88 ± 1.12 mg/L).Conclusion:
CRP was able todetect the presence of systemic inflammation in smokers of more than 10 pack/years, just before them present clinical manifestations of COPD, and could be useful in the early diagnosis of this disease
