RESUMO
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder expressed by abnormal elevations of blood glucose levels. Several epidemiological studies have shown that individuals with DM have an increased loss of clinical attachment when compared to non-DM patients. Other studies have indicated a positive correlation between poor glycemic control and the prevalence and progression of periodontal disease. This paper examines the interrelationship between type 1 diabetes and periodontitis and adverse effects arising as clinical attachment loss and bone resorption, and also reports the periodontal treatment conducted in a clinical case, explaining that the treatment of patients with DM does not differ from treatment indicated for other cases of periodontitis. However, the hyperinflammatory gingival state usually present in patients with DM, especially type 1, requires a management that involves medical care and glycemic control.Key Words – Type 1 diabetes; Periodontal disease; Inflammation.
