Lactancia materna exclusiva a menores de seis meses pertenecientes al Policlínico Docente Municipal de Santiago de Cuba / Exclusive breast feeding to newborns under six months belonging to the Teaching Municipal Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba

RESUMEN

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal de 39 lactantes menores de 6 meses, atendidos en la consulta de Puericultura del Policlínico Docente Municipal de Santiago de Cuba, desde enero hasta marzo del 2012, a fin de analizar los principales aspectos relacionados con la lactancia materna exclusiva, para lo cual se aplicó una encuesta que incluía aspectos clínicos y sociodemográficos. En la casuística se halló una baja proporción de madres que alimentaban a sus hijos solo con leche materna; por tanto, se demostró que existieron deficiencias en el trabajo de promoción y apoyo a la lactancia materna. Se recomendó efectuar mayor preparación y entrenamiento del personal sanitario para brindar consejería efectiva a las madres de lactantes.

ABSTRACT

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 39 newborns under 6 months, assisted in the Puericulture Department from the Municipal Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba, was carried out from January to March, 2012, in order to analyze the main aspects related to the exclusive maternal nursing, for which a survey was applied that included clinical, social and demographic aspects. A low proportion of mothers who fed their children with maternal milk was found in the case material; therefore, it was shown that deficiencies existed in the promotion work and support to the maternal nursing. It was recommended to make a deeper preparation and training of the health staff to offer effective counseling to the mothers of newborns.
