RESUMEN

José María Vargas (1786-1854), médico, cirujano, anatomista, obstetra, oculista, profesor, botánico, químico, dentista, geólogo, minerólogo y matemático. Este artículo destaca algunos aspectos de interés de su extensa y destacada labor en la actividad docente y científica. Primer Rector de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, reformó los estudios de Medicina, dictó clases de Anatomía humana, Cirugía y Química. Presidente de la Dirección General de Instrucción Pública, autor del Código de Instrucción Pública para Universidades y Academias en Venezuela.

ABSTRACT

José Maria Vargas (1786-1854) medical doctor, surgeon, anatomist, obstetrician optician, professor, botanist, chemist, dentistris, geologist, mineralogist and mathematician. This paper highlights some interesting aspects of his long and outstanding work in teaching and scientific activity. First republican dean reformed medicine studies at the Central University of Venezuela where he taught human anatomy, surgery and chemistry. President of the Directorate General of Education and author of the Code of Public Universities and Academies in Venezuela.
