ABSTRACT

Objective:

To evaluate the improvement of iontophoresis on the transdermal permeation of ferulic acid.

Methods:

The abdominal skin of mice was inserted in the modified Franz diffusion cell. Ferulic acid solution was the donor. The content of drug in the acceptor was quantified using the ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The influence of iontophoresis on permeation of ferulic acid was investigated within 10 hours.

Results:

The transdermal amount of ferulic acid was significantly improved by iontophoresis in vitro.

Conclusion:

Iontophoresis significantly improved ferulic acid permeation across skin. It could be a successful method to promote the skin permeation of other organic acids in traditional Chinese medicines.
