En el psicoanálisis, una manera de pensar a un niño es pensarlo en relación a la estructura de sus síntomas, lo cual hace pensar, que el niño es un sujeto responsable frente a las elecciones que realiza y, con las cuales establece sus relaciones con los otros semejantes y con el Otro, este último escrito con O mayúscula , se comprende como el representante de la cultura, la ley, la norma, las figuras representativas para un sujeto - en este caso, para el niño, se trata de la madre, el padre, sus maestros y la escuela - .
