ABSTRACT
Introduction: The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) and the frequency of the ROP associated factors in newborns attended in the Neonatology Service of the Regional Teaching Hospital Las Mercedes, Chiclayo 2007-2009. The Study: observational, retrospective design, transversal and analytic. 353 newborns were selected. Findings: it was detected some degree of ROP in 22% of the newborns. Severity distribution was 48.7% with ROP I, 35.5% with ROP II, 13.2% with ROP IV and 1.3% with ROP V. Surgical treatment was applied to 32% of the cases. In the ROP cases, there were more females than males. Supplementary oxygen was given to 95%. Conclusions: The serious forms are inversely proportional to a gestational age lower than 32 weeks and a weight of less than 1500g. The as sociat ion between ROP, supplementary oxygen administration, infant respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis could be related to the perinatal attention with incomplete and outdated technology, a situation that becomes in the increase of the premature neonatal survivors morbidity(AU)
