Da obtenção de informação ao esquecimento: a vivência da dor de parto em um Hospital-Escola / From information acquisition to forgetfulnessthe living labor pain in the school hospital

RESUMO

Este trabalho é um estudo etnográfico que objetivou compreender como mulheres que deram à luz em um hospital-escola, localizado na cidade de São Paulo, vivenciam e descrevem a dor do processo de parturição. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de observação participante do contexto e entrevistas. Adotou-se a Antropologia Cultural como referencial. Os resultados mostram que as mulheres recebem informação de que a dor é inerente ao parto, em especial, de outras mulheres de seu convívio, ainda, durante a gestação. As mulheres enfatizam que a dor de parto diferencia-se de outras sensações dolorosas pela forte intensidade, dificultando sua descrição e compreensão por quem nunca a sentiu. Outras peculiaridades da dor departo são o esquecimento após o nascimento da criança e a avaliação positiva em razão do sentimento gerado pela presença do filho, contribuindo para o enfrentamento de futura experiência de parto.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to understand how women, who delivered babies at the school hospital in São Paulo city, lived and described the pain of the labor process. An ethnographic method of research was used. Data were collected byparticipant observation of the context and tape recorded interviews. Cultural Anthropology was adopted as the theoretical framework for the analysis. The findings reaveled that women are told the pain comes from the labor and this information isgiven to them during pregnancy, specially by other women they have contact with. The women emphasize that the labor pain is different from other painful sensations due to its strong intesity and the women also affirm that this pain is difficultto be described and understood by women who have never experienced it. Other labor pain peculiarities are forgetfulness of the pain after the baby is born and the positive evaluation on account of the feeling raised by the baby's presence,which contributes for coping with the labor experience in the future.
