Covid en carne propia: médicos enfermos en tiempos de pandemia / Personal experience of covid: ill physicians during the pandemic

RESUMEN

Tanto el relato experiencial guiado por preguntas en formato de entrevista, como el relato experiencial espontáneo y el orientado por tópicos, han sido parte de la forma en que muchos médicos, a lo largo de la Historia, han enfrentado el estudio, la terapéutica y el seguimiento de sus pacientes e, incluso, de ellos mismos. En una época en la que proliferan trabajos que buscan frenéticamente desentrañar hasta el último misterio del COVID y de su agente causal, el SARS Cov-2, no debemos olvidar el valor intrínseco de esta forma de ciencia testimonial. A pesar de este gran interés, no siempre es sencillo contar con el testimonio sobre alguna enfermedad a partir de los pacientes que la han sufrido. Cuando éstos son funcionarios de la Salud, no obstante, existe un conjunto de elementos que los hacen particularmente interesantes y útiles: tener estudios y conocimientos de salud y enfermedad, haber sido tratantes o colaboradores integrales del tratamiento, contar con el oficio y habilidad para encontrar puntos de inflexión que pueden ser de ayuda para otros, y el desarrollo de empatía con el doble rol de médico y paciente. Cada uno de estos elementos permite que los testimonios compartidos sean únicos, valiosos per se, y deben ser ponderados en su justa dimensión. Conscientes de esta extraordinaria oportunidad de compartir la experiencia como pacientes de una enfermedad gravísima en un histórico tiempo de pandemia, hemos procurado el testimonio de tres médicos de distintas nacionalidades (mexicano, chilena y holandés), quienes generosamente aceptaron compartir su vivencia y responder las preguntas que les enviamos, cumpliendo con los tiempos y restricciones del formato editorial. Las preguntas fueron las mismas para los tres entrevistados. La entrevista se diseñó pensando en abarcar la dimensión humana del médico enfermo y recuperado recientemente, sus certezas y temores, su relación consigo mismo, su propio mundo, con la sociedad a la que pertenecen, con sus pacientes y sus colegas. No es lo mismo un "paciente médico" que un "médico enfermo".

ABSTRACT

Throughout history many physicians have approached the study, therapy and follow-up of patients and even of themselves using spontaneous and topic oriented personal stories as well as directed interview questions. At a time when frenetic research abounds in a bid to untangle every last COVID mystery and those of its causal agent, SARS-Cov-2 we should not forget the intrinsic value of the personal testimony of its sufferers. Despite the interest in it, it is not always easy to obtain testimonies from patients who have suffered a particular disease. When these patients are health workers, however, certain elements make it particularly interesting and useful: having knowledge and studies in health and disease; having been attending or collaborating physician for the same pathology; the ability to find inflection points which may be useful to others; the development of empathy through the double role of doctor and patient. Each of these elements makes these unique shared testimonies valuable per se and should be given due weight. Conscious of the extraordinary opportunity of sharing patient experience of an extremely serious disease during this historical pandemic, we have obtained the testimonies of physicians of three different nationalities (Mexican, Chilean and Dutch) who have generously agreed to share their experiences and answer the questions we sent, within the time frame and editorial format. All three physicians answered the same questions. The interview was designed to capture the human dimension of the ill and recently-recovered physician, their certainties and fears, their relationship to themselves, to their own world and to the society to which they and their patients and colleagues belong. An ill physician is not the same as a physician who is a patient.
