ABSTRACT
Mercury exposure during pestle and mortar amalgam manipulation carries an inherent occupational hazard for dental personnel. Yet it is the most commonly used method based on its strength, longevity but mostly on the perception of its cost-effectiveness. The aim of this study was to analyse the cost-benefit of replacing manual manipulation of amalgam with the mechanized capsule system in a dental teaching hospital in Islamabad. Situation analysis of amalgam manipulation in the Operative Department of Islamic International Dental Hospital was conducted via key informant interviews and data interpretation from administrative and accounts office statistics. The cost of material for one amalgam filling using the [pestle and mortar] method for the year 2008, was found to be Pak Rs. 58.33. The same using the [mechanized amalgam capsule] method was calculated at Rs 51.33. Use of protective personal wear during manipulation was sporadic and below recommended standard. Using mechanized amalgam capsules are not only cost-effective but also reduce the occupational risk of mercury toxicity to dental health care professionals, especially for teaching dental hospitals
