ABSTRACT
In a prospective study, 43 patients sustaining major pelvic fractures were examined with both plain radiography and computerized tomography [CT]. In contrast to plain radiography, CT scanning detected 27 additional lesions, confirmed 7 suspected lesions and ruled out 7 suspected lesions. CT was not routinely performed due to associated injuries and economic factors. We suggest a selective role for CT of the injured pelvis. Early indications include visualisation of posterior pelvic areas, acetabular fractures, cases being considered for open surgery and evaluation of pelvic soft-tissue injuries. Later indications include verification of open reduction, assessment of bony union and planning of postoperative ambulation
