ABSTRACT
The effect of systemic administration of fluconazole and topical application of nystatin in conjunction with denture disinfection by glutaraldhyde on denture stomatitis was evaluated. Subjects with clinical evidence of denture stomatitis were selected and investigated clinically and mycologically. The subjects were divided into two groups, 18 patients each. The first group was given 50mg of fluconazole capsule daily for 2 weeks. The second group was instructed to sprinkle 140 mg nystatin powder on the fitting surface of the denture three times daily for two weeks. The dentures were soaked in glutaraldhyde disinfectant every night in both groups. It was found that systemic administration of fluconazole and topical application of nystatin are effective in treatment of denture stomatitis and reducing the candidal count. However, the cure rate of systemic fluconazole was higher than that of topical nystatin
