Lipids patterns in protein calorie malnutrition

ABSTRACT

Significant increase in total lipids was observed in both Marasmus and Marasmic Kwashiorkor but not in Kwashiorkor. Cholesterol and phospholipids showed significant decrease while NEFA showed significant increase in the 3 syndromes. Lipoproteins were significantly increased in marasmus but decreased in kwashiorkor while infinity-lipoproteins were significantly decreased in both. Triglycerides were increased in marasms only. These changes were attributed to the dietary condition as well as to liver state and function
