ABSTRACT
A military transfusion service for the Armed Forces should be organized on a national bipolar pattern, consisting of a central blood bank and regional transfusion services attached to the regional military hospitals. The service should be charged with the responsibility of procuring and managing the national blood reserve and delivering it to the theatre of military operations, its field hospitals, aeromedical transport systems and operating rooms. The transfusion service should have full capabilities for storing blood in the frozen state and its stocks must reflect the needs of the Armed Forces at war. The service should be functional in peace time to benefit day-to-day medical care and to ensure its operability under military conditions
