ABSTRACT
In order to investigate the clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness of 4 available Flouroquinolones Ofloxacin, pefloxacin ciprofioxacin and Norfioxacin for treatment of acute bacterial diarrhea we expand this clinical double-blind, comparative and randomnly assigned trial This study included 160 patients with clinically and microscopically proved acute bacterial diarrhea for not imiore thami two days. They were classified randomly for 4 groups [one group for each drug [40] patients for each group. Stool examination and culture pre, during, post-treatment and during follow up for 2 weeks were done. All drugs were taken in proper doses on empty stomach twice daily without any difference in shape. taste and colour. Ofloxacin proved to be the most clinical and cost effective one as it costs 21,3 LE per clinical success and was able to induce complete clinical and bacteriological cure- which has a good implications on community health- within this short period [2day]. Pefloxacin costs 27.3 LE per clinical success with only one resistant Shigella strains. So we recommend 2 days course of Ofloxacin for empiric treatment of acute bacterial diarrhea
