Disability adjusted life years [DALY] lost due to hypertension in Assuit, Egypt

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to measure the disability adjusted life years [DALY] lost due to hypertension in an upper Egyptian community. A cross-sectional community-based survey of non-institutionalized elderly individuals [age >50 years] in Assiut was conducted. A household cluster sampling was used to select the required predetermined 240 subjects of this study. The results revealed that the majority of participants aged 50-60 years. Smoking was predominantly among men. Two-thirds of the subjects reported a sedentary life style. A high prevalence of self-reported diabetes mellitus was noted. Women having a significantly higher body mass than men. Disability adjusted life year was more among the study sample subjects who had >10 years of education, diabetic, sedentary life style and body mass index more than 22 [Kg/m2]
