Treatment of recent displaced supracondylar fracture humerus in children by open reduction and wire fixation through the medial approach

ABSTRACT
Forty cases of recent displaced supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children were treated. twenty eight were boys [70 percent] and 12 [30 percent] were girls, the mean age was 6 years, the youngest 3 years, and the oldest was 12 years. The left side was affected in 26 cases [65 percent], the right in 14 cases [35 percent]. The commonest mechanism of injury was fall on outstretched hand with the elbow in extension in 38 child [95 percent], In 32 child [80 percent] there was ecchymosis around the elbow, in 28 child [70 percent] the ecchymosis was in the medial side, in 3 children [7.5 percent] it was on the lateral side, and posteriorly in one child [2.5 percent]. Under endotracheal anesthesia all cases treated by open reduction and wire fixation through medial approach. These cases were followed up clinically and radiographically for an average period 6 months. The results were excellent in 32 child [80 percent], good in 6 children [15 percent], and fair in 2 children [5 percent]
