ABSTRACT
Pantoea agglomerans [formally designated Enterobacter agglomerans], is an environmental Gram-negative organism, frequently associated with plants. This organism has been recognized in numerous human infections. In this case report, we describe a young male admitted with septic arthritis caused by Pantoea agglomerans. This was presumed to be acquired through a direct traumatic inoculation of the right ankle joint, during outdoor sporting activity. After a protracted course of antibiotics, repeated arthrocenteses and arthroscopic irrigation with debridement, the patient fully recovered with normal joint function. To our knowledge, this type of infection has been described in only one case report in the literature. Aggressive treatment both surgical and medical is required to avoid chronicity
