Cervical smear: a screening test for carcinoma of the cervix

ABSTRACT

A study of cervical screening for carcinoma of cervix was carried out on 500 patients at the outpatients department of Services Hospital Lahore from January 1992 through July 1992. On cytological evaluation 8 i.e. 1.6% were found to have abnormal smears. One patient had an advanced squamous cell carcinoma. Another had atypical endometrial cells. Among the remaining six patients, one had moderate dyskaryosis and the other had severe dyskaryosis. A repeat smear was carried out on the two patients who came for a follow up, which showed normal cytology. They were advised to have screening again in one year, which later showed normal cytology.
