RESUMO
Two percent hypertonic was used for perioperatory intravenous infusion during transurethral prostatic ressection to prevent water intoxication and dilutional hyponatremia. Twenty pour patients allocated into two groups were studied. group I received 0.9 percent saline and Gropu II received 2 percent hypertonic saline. No premedication was used in order to maintain the patients awake. Routine monitoring was used. Patients underwent spinal anesthesia with 15mg of 0.5 percent hyperbaric bupivacaine. The irrigation fluid used was plain water at a height of 50cm from pubis. Serum sodium determinations were done before and at the end of surgery, 3, 12, 24 and 48 hours after surgery. Significant reductions in serum sodium concentrations were observed at the of surgery, 3 and 12 hours after surgery in Group I, but not in Group II. The lower plasma sodium concentration was 126 mEq/L and no clinical symptoms of water intoxication were observed in the studied patients. We conclude that sodium plasma concentrations are more stable in patients receiving 2 percent saline as compared to those receiving normal saline
