Sentidos e significados do trabalho: explorando conceitos, variáveis e estudos empíricos brasileiros / Senses and meanings of work: exploring Brazilian concepts, variables and empirical studies

RESUMO

O artigo apresenta uma breve revisão da literatura sobre sentidos e significados que trabalhadores atribuem aos seus trabalhos e identifica perspectivas teóricas que diferenciam sentidos e significados, em contrapartida a outras que os tratam como um único fenômeno. Foi possível demonstrar que trata-se de temática ainda pouco explorada e cuja maioria dos estudos está baseada nas investigações desenvolvidas pelo Meaning of Work International Research Team ([MOW], 1987) e, mais recentemente, por Morin (2001). As variáveis adotadas nas pesquisas do fenômeno no Brasil advêm, predominantemente, dos trabalhos do MOW e são a centralidade do trabalho, as normas sociais do trabalho e os resultados valorizados do trabalho. Verifica-se a importância da multidisciplinaridade para a compreensão da atribuição de sentidos e significados do trabalho pelos sujeitos dado que se trata de um construto psicológico multidimensional e dinâmico, e que resulta da interação entre variáveis pessoais e ambientais relacionadas ao trabalho.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a brief review of the literature on the senses and meanings that workers attribute to work, and it identifies theoretical perspectives that differentiate between 'sense' and 'meaning', as opposed to others that treat both terms as referring to the same phenomenon. The analysis indicates that this theme is as yet little explored in Brazil, and that the majority of studies are based on investigations developed by the Meaning of Work International Research Team ([MOW], 1987) and, more recently, by Morin (2001). The variables adopted by Brazilian studies of this phenomenon, predominantly derived from MOW works, are the centrality of work, the social norms of work, and the valued results of work. The results indicate the relevance of a multidisciplinary approach to the comprehension of how subjects attribute senses and meanings to work, since these are multidimensional and dynamic psychological constructs resulting from the interaction between personal variables and work related environments.
