ABSTRACT
The objective of this experimental study was to determine the influence of a lumbar support belt on the thickness of the lumbar intra-disc spaces in a group of laborers engaged in the manual lifting of loads. The workers in the sample were divided into four groups (1) with load and belt, (2) with load and no belt, (3) without load, but with belt, and (4) no load and no belt. The weight of the load applied was 15 kg, held in front of the worker, using a pack held by a strap between the shoulders, with the worker grasping the load in front of his body using his arms. The lumbar support belts were typical of those used in the mining industry to prevent lumbar problems. Lumbar X-rays, focused at the L4-L5 level, were obtained and interpreted by a medical radiologist with the four study groups. The results were analyzed using the Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney (Wilcoxon) tests, finding that there were no significant differences between the test groups which suggested-as a conclusion- that the lumbar belt did not constitute an element of personal protection, and that it's use was not based on reasonable grounds from the mechanical perspective.
