ABSTRACT
The human mind is not an isolated or a priori "faculty", but a complex "activity", characterised by its systemic structure, mediated character and historical-social origin. Its systemic structure comprises a dynamic ensemble of psychological (cognitive, volitive, and affective) components in connection with a distributed network of brain regions, each one contributing with basic operations to the accomplishment of the activity as a whole. Its mediated semiotic character results from the fact that the human being first accomplishes mental actions, by operating on symbolic representations of things and establishing projects and programs, before acting on the material world. The origin of the human mind is the internalization or internal reconstruction of socially produced and shared external operations, tools and signs. The acquisition of linguistic signs and the mastering of language, particularly in dialogical-argumentative contexts, are prerequisites for behavioral self-regulation, logical and discoursive reasoning, as well as for the ability to reflect and to judge. The development of the tertiary multimodal associative cortex, particularly that of prefrontal regions, is crucial for the acquisition of these cognitive abilities.
