ABSTRACT
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of physical training on serum GH (Growth hormone) and IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor) levels in diabetic rats. For the study, male [Wistar] rats were distributed into 4 groups, sedentary control (SC), trained control (TC), sedentary diabetic (SD), and trained diabetic group (TD). Experimental diabetes was induced by Aloxan (35mg/b.w.). The training program consisted in swimming 5 days/week, 1 h/day, during 6 weeks. At the end of the experimental period, the rats were sacrificed and their blood was collected for determining dosages of serum glucose, insulin, GH and IGF-1. The tibiae were collected for total area determination. The results were analyzed by ANOVA through the Bonferroni test and the significance level was set at 5%. Diabetes resulted in increase in glycaemia and decrease in insulinaemia, GH, and the tibial total area. The results indicated that physical training did not significantly altered serum glucose, insulin, and GH levels in the diabetic groups. However, it promoted significant increase in serum IGF-1 in both TC and TD groups. It was concluded that physical training promotes important adaptations related to growth in diabetic organisms.
