ABSTRACT
Purpose. Compare linear adjustments (LIN) with quadratics (QUA) when describing O2 curve on incremental test (IT). Methods. Fourteen physically fit men underwent an IT, at the initial speed 5 km.h-1 (increasing 1 km.h-1.min-1 until exhaustion). The curves were adjusted individually using LIN and QUA equations (average of the last 10 s-1 of each stage). The comparisons have been made using residues of equations (test F) and between predicted and measured values considering absolute and relative loads to maximal (Wilcoxon test). QUA adjustments were better in eight individuals (57.1%; p < 0.05) and in three individuals (21.4%), near the level of significance (p < 0.15). Results. The predicted values about QUA were similar to the ones measured in almost all intensities studied (absolute and relative intensities; p < 0.05) whereas in LIN adjustments they were systematically different. Conclusion. The data presented in this study consolidate the curvilinear response of O2 curve in higher loads making the use of simple adjustments (LIN) unfeasible to describe them.
